Experience of using BIM as a Client: Mike Ford, University of the West England

Many in the FM industry have struggled to make use of information from BIM.  Is it surprising? Not really, as a sector, we’re all as diverse and different as the buildings we manage.  No one has yet found the one size fits all solution.  It’s a bit like cake, yes, cake!  Just like how there are hundreds of recipes for different types of cake, so are there many ways we could apply BIM to our building portfolios.  But if you were trying to find a cake that perfectly suits your taste, it would be far easier to find and existing recipe and tweak the ingredients rather than guessing at the perfect combination of flour, butter, sugar and eggs.  I’m going to share UWE’s recipe for our digital campus, so you can get a head start on building yours!  Bring your own cake!

The Information Shopping List: Andrew Waring, Holmes Miller

You’d be forgiven for thinking BIM is complicated. There are so many acronyms, foreign terms, documents and guidance out there that would leave all but the most dedicated specialists confused.

Relating how to ask for information back to something familiar, Andrew , BIM Manager at Holmes Miller Architects, discusses how to write a shopping list effectively as an analogy to asking for project information and how you can gain the most benefit from requesting asset information as a deliverable.
