Biography

Richard co-founded Cottrell & Vermeulen Architecture with Brian Vermeulen in 1992.  His role as Director includes overseeing the design and management of multiple projects.  Richard is also responsible for Cottrell & Vermeulen’s Project Development, Community Development and Liaison, Performance Assessment, Press Liaison, and Finances. Richard takes a personal role in the design of all CVA projects and is involved from concept design to completion of all his projects.

Richard’s practice is a multi award winning architects, having amongst other awards won 5 RIBA Awards and been 3 time winner of the BD Education Architect of the year in 2011 ,16 and 18 and overall BD Architect of the Year in 2016.

Richard is well versed in tactical review of projects and sites through his role as a member of both Southwark and Lewisham design review panels and as Chair of the new Harrow Design Review panel. He has also been an External Examiner for the Architecture department at the University of Cambridge for both Undergraduate Architecture Diploma Courses at East London University and South Bank University.

Richard has a career-long involvement with master planning, designing, remodelling, refurbishing and evaluating educational buildings and sites. He has genuine expertise in how to articulate projects and make them happen by engaging with stakeholders, authorities, funders and communities, whether for an individual school such as Westborough Primary School, the UK’s first Zero Carbon school refurbishment pilot, or Birmingham BSF, delivering an exemplar for Lendlease.  Many of these projects involve constrained sites with residential and infrastructural adjacencies.  He also experienced at working within large masterplans as part of a team of architects delivering a shared vision.

Richard has lectured widely in the UK on the subject of educational space and has run a teaching unit in the architecture department at CASS. Previously, Richard was the Chair of Governors at Goodrich Primary School in Southwark.
